A Winterhaven mosquito pool haas tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV).
The Imperial County Public Health Department announced that a sample collected on June 11, 2024, has tested positive for the disease. It is the first positive mosquito pool identified positive in Imperial County this year. West Nile Virus is transmitted to humans through bites by infected mosquitos. According to the Imperial County Public Health Department, most individuals who are infected with WNV will not experience any symptoms. Others will have only mild symptoms. However the infection can be severe in elderly and individuals with compromised immune systems. Dr, Stephan Munday, Imperial County Health Officer, residents should take steps to eliminate any standing water on their property that could serve as breeding ground for mosquitos.
