The National Spelling Bee Competition is underway in Washington D.C.
Imperial County's representative has been eliminated but not before advancing to the quarterfinals. Carina Beltran, a student at St. Mary's School in El Centro, finished 60th out of 245 contestants. On the way to the semifinals Carina spelled words like ptyxis, inducement and Leith correctly.
By the way, ptyxis means arrangement of single leaf in bud condition. It is pronounced tick- sis.
Leith is from the Gaelic meaning wet. Leith is also a part of the City of Edinburgh, Scotland.
