They adopted a resolution declaring Salvation Mountain a historically significant proterty and historical resource for the purposes of the California Environmental Quality Act. The resolution also recognized artist Leonard Clarke Knight, who was the creator of Salvation Mountain. Knight began creating the religious art installation in 1986. He passed away in February 2014. Volunteers have since worked to preserve his creation. Visitors travel from around the world to view Salvation Mountain
