Almost 600,000 pounds of unneeded prescription medications were collected during the DEA's National Prescription Take Back Day on October 28.
The unneeded medications were collected nationwide during the event. For more than a decade, the event has removed nearly 18 million pounds of unneeded medications from medicine cabinets throughout the nation. According to the DEA, removing unnecessary medications from the home can prevent the medications from being used improperly or illegally.
