A voluntary recall of nearly 6,500 cases of whole cantaloupe has been announced by the Food and Drug Administration.
The fruit, sold under the brand name KANDY, may potentially be contaminated with salmonella, a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with a weakened immune system. The cantaloupe was distributed by Eagle Produce LLC based in Scottsdale, Arizona. The potentially contaminated fruit was distributed in California as well as a number of other southwestern states. Consumers should not eat the recalled melons.
