She told El Centro Police that she sent the money to someone claiming to be a federal agent. The woman was directed to buy gift cards and pass the information on to the supposed agent.

Law enforcement officials warn people of the many scams are looking to take your money. With electronic devices that can show a cloned number on caller ID that shows a local number or even an apparent federal agency or local law enforcement agency, scammers are able to fool possible victims. Residents should be aware that scammers will demand gift cards that are easily used and untraceable. Legitimate agencies would never request gift cards.
