An inmate at the Imperial County Jail died after being found unresponsive early Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, at about 8:00 p.m., eight men incarcerated at the jail were found to be experiencing medical emergencies in a jail module at the Imperial County Sheriff's Regional Adult Detention Facility. Correctional staff, along with certified emergency medical personnel, provided life-saving measures to the inmates. The 8 individuals were taken to 2 local hospitals for advanced care. All eight have since been released from the hospital and are back in jail.

At approximately 6:50 a.m. Thursday, another male subject was found unresponsive in a separate jail module of the same facility. Despite life-saving efforts, the 33-year-old man died. The identity of the individual was not released pending notification of family members. 

Following standard protocol, the Imperial County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. The findings of the investigation is expected to take time before being concluded. Preliminary information indicates that all subjects were exposed to an illicit substance.
