(Governor Newsom announces his nominee to the State Supreme Court)...He is looking to fill the vacancy left by Associate Justice Mariano Florentino Cuellar, who retired in October 2021.

The Governor announced his nominee Tuesday. He has chosen Patricia Guerrero. If approved, Guerrero would be the first Hispanic woman to serve on the California Supreme Court. Guerrero was born and raised in Brawley. The 50 year old currently lives in San Diego. She currently serves as an associate justice on the 4th Circuit Court of Appeal, Division One, a position she has held since 2017. The Governors nomination must be approved by the State Senate.
