The El Centro Police Department ( ECPD ) has received a $50,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety ( OTS ).

The grant will allow ECPD to start a program to deter dangerous and illegal driving behavior that increase the risk of accidents in the community. According to Sgt. John Tang , " Impairment , speeding and other dangerous driving behaviors jeopardize the safety of other people on the road. This funding allows us to provide necessary traffic enforcement measures with the goal of reducing serious injury and fatal accidents on our roads." According to Tang , the grant will allow DUI checkpoints and patrols , enforcement operations to focus on distracted drivers , bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operations , community education presentations , officer training , and enforcement operations focused on top violations that cause crashes ; speeding , failure to yield , improper turning or lane changes and stop sign or red light running. The program will start November 1 , 2021 and run through September 30 , 2022.
