A vehicle pursuit through the southern part of Imperial County ended in the arrest of a felon.
According to the Imperial Police Department , at about 1:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon , officers responded to a report of a suspicious man looking inside cars near the Imperial Irrigation District offices. When responding officers approached the man he jumped in the passenger seat of a waiting car and fled the scene. The suspects car went southbound on Highway 86 where the driver and his passenger began throwing objects out of the car , striking and damaging pursuing police cars. The pursuit continued through the cities of El Centro and then on to Calexico with speeds reaching in excess of 110 miles per hour. The car continued to the downtown Calexico area where the passenger jumped out and ran through the pedestrian crossing in Mexico. The car then went on for a few more blocks and was eventually stopped on Villa Campina just east of Rockwood Avenue. The driver was taken into custody by Imperial Police officers assisted by Calexico officers. The driver has been identified as 21-year old Juan Carlos Lopez of Westmorland. Lopez was booked into Imperial County Jail of charges of Felony Reckless Evading , Vandalism , and Felon in Possession of Ammunition. Imperial Police officers and Imperial County Sheriff's deputies searched the area of Highway 86 near Aten Road and located multiple 9mm rounds of ammunition. No firearm was found. Assisting the Imperial Police Department were the El Centro Police Department , Calexico Police Department and Imperial County Sheriff's Office.
