El Centro Police and Fire Departments responded to an accident Friday afternoon.

The accident occurred shortly after 5:00 p.m. in an alley in the 1200 block of Adams Avenue. A car hit a fence and came to rest on top of a gas meter. Police and Fire personnel evacuated nearby residents and ordered others to shelter in place until the gas line was shut off. About 30 people were evacuated. The Gas Company had the broken gas line secured by shortly before 10:00 p.m. and residents were allowed to return. The driver of the car was not injured but ECPD is investigating wether the driver was impaired.
