(Niland Fire)…As of 4:30 Monday morning the fire was 90 percent contained

. County Fire Chief Alfredo Estrada said there had been no reported injuries in the fire that has devastated Niland. The Chief said 20-30 structures were destroyed mi9n the fire that began Sunday afternoon. He said an assessment would be conducted to determine the exact number. Estrada said between 500 and 600 residents had been evacuated. The evacuation center had been set up at Calipatria High School. He said Monday 130 residents had been displaced, and were provided hotel vouchers by the American Red Cross. Once the fire is fully contained, more accurate numbers are expected. The fire began as a brush fire Sunday afternoon. Strong winds blew the fire across 4th Street and into the structures. Mutual aid was requested and every department in the county responded, as well as the Yuma Fire Department and two out of County Strike Teams. The Chief said the strong winds made it very difficult to combat the blaze. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
