(Confusion clarified)…The peaceful protest will go on as scheduled.
The confusion was created by apparent hackers on social media. The protest is being organized by Black Lives Matter and Imperial Valley Social Justice League. A flyer had been released announcing the peaceful protest, but then Sunday another flyer announced the event had been canceled. Monday morning Hilton Smith of Black Lives Matter said the cancelation flyer was somebody’s attempt to silence the protest. Smith said the event would be going on as planned. It will start at 6:00 pm at the County Courthouse on Main Street in El Centro. He said the peaceful protest will deal with the recent death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and others who have died as a result of police confrontations. Smith said the protest would be more like a rally, and would not be marching anywhere. He said speakers would include the El Centro Chief of Police and other community members. Smith said the community is encouraged to attend.
