Multiple agencies are investigating an officer involved shooting in El Centro.
The shooting occurred shortly after 7:00 a.m. Sunday after El Centro Police responded to the Rite-Aid store at Imperial and Main Streets. A 9 1 1 call had been made by employees of the store after a man stole several knives and told store employees that they should call the police department because he was going to kill an officer. When officers arrived on the scene they saw the man in the parking lot. The man , later identified as Manuel Gonzales Verdugo , refused to comply with the officers commands to drop the knife and charged at officers. An El Centro Police officer used a bean bag shotgun to subdue the man but the non-lethal rounds had no effect on him. Verdugo continued to advance towards officers with the knife in his hand and officers , fearing for their safety , shot the man. Verdugo was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Imperial County District Attorney's Office responded to the scene of the shooting as did the Imperial County Sheriff's Office Scientific Investigations Unit and the Coroner's Office. The shooting will be reviewed by the El Centro Police Department to see if the use of deadly force complied with the department policies and procedures. The District Attorney's Office will conduct an independent review to determine if the force used by the officers violated any criminal laws. No ECPD officers were injured in the incident. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the El Centro Police Department or Imperial County District Attorney's Office.
