One lane of State Route 111 will reopen on Friday night.
Caltrans says that crews are on schedule to partially reopen the section of highway between Davis and Gillespie Roads about 5 miles north of Niland. Detours have been in place for two weeks as work was in progress to mitigate a natural-occurring geyser that has been moving towards the highway. The geyser / mud pot has already encroached on the Union Pacific rail lines in the area.
Workers will bein place to direct traffic one direction at a time onto the open lane as crews complete paving operations through Friday night and Saturday. Both lanes of traffic are expected to open by Saturday night. This section of State Route 111 will be subject to single-lane closures and one-way traffic control as needed for on-going construction. Caltrans said that full closures are not anticipated.
