The California Highway Patrol has released more details about the Saturday afternoon accident involving a Holtville High School van.
The accident occurred at about 5:26 p.m. Saturday at Highway 111 and Worthington Road. A van carrying members of the Holtville High School volleyball team was eastbound on Worthington Road approaching Highway 111. A Subaru Forrester, driven by Janet Henry , 77 , of El Centro was southbound on Highway 111. The Van entered the intersection directly into the path of the Subaru. The driver of the school van , 32-year old Nereida Quevedo of Holtville , and a passenger , 17-year old Angela Dizon of Holtville , were transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center for what were described as minor injuries. Two other passengers in the van , 18-year old Madelyn Pena and 17-year old Abigail Valenzuela , both from Holtville , were taken by helicopter to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment of moderate to major injuries. Henry was transported to ECRMC with minor injuries as well. Highway 111 was closed for about 30 minutes to allow the air ambulances to land. The accident remains under investigation. The CHP says that alcohol / drugs were not a factor in the accident and that all parties were seat belted properly.
