(Strong, gusty winds)….They hit the Imperial and Coachella Vallies Tuesday.
They will continue through Thursday. The National Weather Service says officially, the winds at the County Airport were recorded at 47 miles per hour. They were stronger in other areas. Downed fences and trees were reported across the Valleys. The Imperial Irrigation District says sporadic power outages were reported. About 150 IID customers were affected in Imperial County and about that many in the Coachella Valley. IID crews were able to restore the power to the affected areas, except for the S-Line. That is the power line importing and exporting power to San Diego. The tower west of El Centro and south of Interstate 8 was damaged, and the line was last reported still down. That line does not affect any local IID customers. As expected, air quality in Imperial County was listed in a range of moderate to unhealthy due to high levels of PM 10, which is mostly dust in the air.
