The El Centro Police Department is investigating an accident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian.
The accident was reported shortly after midnight on Thursday , February 28. Officers responded to the area of 4th and Driftwood after a report of the accident. A 54-year old man , described as a local transient , was apparently trying to cross 4th from west to east when he was struck by a northbound car driven by Manuel Lopez of El Centro. The pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and , according to witnesses , appeared to be drunk , with his pants down , as he stumbled or wandered into the roadway. The driver of the car stopped and immediately rendered first aid until medical personnel arrived on the scene. The victim was unconscious and had obvious signs of trauma to his head. Attempts to resuscitate the victim were unsuccessful.
Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol are not suspected to be a factor in the accident. The name of the victim has not been released yet as the Imperial County Coroner's Office attempts to notify next of kin. The accident remains under investigation.
