Firefighters have made substantial progress in battling the Tusil Fire near Campo.

As of late Wednesday the fire had consumed over 800 acres and was 55% contained. The California Highway Patrol reported that as of 5:00 p.m. Wednesday all eastbound lanes of Interstate 8 are open but, at times, westbound lanes will be partially closed to aid firefighting efforts. 

The fire broke out early Tuesday afternoon near Tusil Road on the Campo Reservation and quickly spread south eventually jumping over Interstate 8. The freeway was completely closed for several hours Tuesday and partially reopened Wednesday. One out building was damaged. There were no injuries reported. Over 170 personnel were deployed along with two helicopters. The fire is expected to burn for several more days.

A brush fire east of Brawley continues to burn. Labelled the Whitlock Fire, the blaze broke out Tuesday morning. Over 100 acres of brush on BLM lands have been burned. Multiple local agencies initially responded to the three alarm fire before it jumped the Highline Canal. As of Wednesday evening the fire was reported to be 40% contained.
