A large brush fire elicited a 3-alarm response Sunday.
The fire, at State Route 98 and Hammers Road, was reported at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Initially reported as palm trees burning, the fire spread to nearby vegetation. Imperial County Fire Department responded and then initiated a 3rd alarm requesting mutual aid from Holtville, El Centro, Calexico and Naval Air Facility El Centro. Crews remained on the site until about 3:45 p.m.
An Imperial County Fire Department engine responding to the blaze was involved in a traffic accident at southbound State Route 111 and McCabe Road. The fire engine was traveling with emergency lights and siren. Two people, one of them a firefighter, were transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center for treatment. The California Highway Patrol is investigating.
