The Calexico Police Department is investigating a recent spike in vehicle thefts and recoveries involving Hyundai and Kia vehicles.

According to Calexico Police, Sonatas and Elantras across various model years are especially targeted. A major factor behind the thefts is that the cars lack advanced anti-theft technology. Also contributing is the spread of how-to videos on social media that demonstrate methods or stealing the vehicles. The trend is not just in Calexico but, statewide across the country. Calexico Police urge residents to extra steps to protect their vehicles: always lock your car, park in a well-lit area, and consider using steering wheel locks or alarm systems. Also, report suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
