Calexico Police have made an arrest in Saturday morning attack.
Police responded to a physical altercation at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday. The 9 1 1 caller said that there were multiple subjects, men and women, involved in the altercation in the 200 block of East First Street. The caller said that one of the subjects had a baseball bat. Officers arrived on the scene two minutes after the calll and located a 39-year-old man who had blunt force trauma to his face and bleeding from his head. The suspects had fled the scene. Officers interviewed the victim and witnesses and collected surveillance video. All outstanding suspects were identified and on Monday Calexico detectives obtained a search warrant for a Calexico residence . Officers were unable to locate the suspect at the residence but a few hours later, two suspects turned themselves into law enforcement. One, 33-year-old Victor Zavala-Avila, 0f Calexico, was arrested and booked into Imperial County Jail on charges of Attempted Murder. The second suspect was interviewed and released, pending further investigation.
In the press release, Calexico Police said that they wanted to correct some information on social media. The victim is alive and currently recovering. The uniformed individuals seen in cell phone videos are Port Security Officers, not Calexico police.
According to Calexico Police, this is an active investigation and anyone who may have any information pertaining to the crime is asked to contact the department.
