A 36-year-old El Centro man is in custody following a violent assault Thursday morning.

According to El Centro Police, at about 11:00 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to the report of an assault in the 300 block of Eucalyptus Avenue.  Initial reports said that an individual had been struck in the head. On arrival, officers located two victims suffering from severe injuries. Both victims were treated at the scene and then taken to the hospital. Preliminary investigation showed that a violent physical altercation had occurred, and Richard Lopez Jr. was identified as the man who attacked the two victims. Officers were able to locate Lopez, and he was arrested and booked into Imperial County Jail on charges of Attempted Murder. El Centro Police recognized the members of the public who came forward with information that assisted in the quick arrest of Lopez. Officers determined that this was a targeted attack involving individuals who knew one another and is not considered an ongoing threat to the public. The viscous attack remains under investigation.
