A rare pest was found in a shipment of produce at the Calexico Port of Entry Cargo Facility.

According to U. S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), on January 8, 2025,  agriculture specialists at the port inspected a shipment containing red and green leaf lettuce. The shipment was referred for an intensive agriculture inspection. A CPB agriculture specialist discovered an unusual insect in the lettuce leaves. The pest was sent to the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service for identification. On February 5, 2025, USDA identified the pest as Campislossa peregrine, a part of the fruit fly family. The species has not been recorded in the USDA pest identification database. The Calexico Ag Specialists scored a first. The driver and produce shipment were returned to Mexico after the initial encounter.

Roque Caza, Port Director said, " Discovering the first-of-its-kind pest in our nation is a remarkable achievement. Our agriculture specialist role will continue to aid in safeguarding our environment and agriculture."
