Pope Francis has named Cardinal Robert McElroy as the archbishop of Washington.

Cardinal McElroy is currently the Bishop of the San Diego Diocese that includes Imperial County. The Vatican made the announcement on Monday. McElroy, 70, will replace Cardinal Wilton Gregory. McElroy was named bishop of the San Diego Diocese in 2015 and was elevated to cardinal in 2022. Cardinal McElroy is a native of San Francisco. He is a graduate of Harvard University with a master's in history from Stanford University.
