Fentanyl valued at $8.4 million was seized at the downtown Calexico Port of Entry.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), shortly before 10:00 a.m. Friday morning, a 23-year-old man driving a pickup truck approached the port in downtown Calexico. During an initial examination, a CBP officer referred the driver and vehicle to secondary inspection. A non-intrusive inspection using the port's imaging system was conducted and irregularities were noticed. A CBP K-9 team then alerted to the pickup indicating the presence of narcotics. Additional inspection led to the discovery of 41 packages concealed in the spare tire and rear seat of the truck. The packages contained approximately 840,000 pills that tested positive for fentanyl. Total weight of the drugs was over 185 pounds with an estimated street value of $8,400,000. The driver was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations for further processing.
