(Last weeks freeze causes some damage)….County Ag Commissioner Connie Valenzuela says monetary losses have not been determined. Last week temperatures dipped into the 20’s in some areas of the County. While this was a nice break for some, it was not good for agriculture. Valenzuela said statistical numbers on the damage caused by the low temperatures was not available. She said information from growers, however, does indicate there was some crop damage. She said there was some damage to early plantings of squash and sweet corn. Some potato fields have been lost. A 40-acre bell pepper field was lost and some zucchini transplants were lost. The Ag Commissioner says there was damage to some Citrus Orchards. She said some of the current fruit crop was also damaged. Valenzuela said in some areas there was damage to blooms, so there may be loss of part of the next crop. She said leafy greens were okay after the freeze. She said a more detailed assessment would be needed to determine the exact loss estimates.
