(Searchers use technology to find downed plane)…The private plane was reported missing Wednesday afternoon.
The state Office of Emergency Services reported the plane had dropped from radar as it flew north of Julian. The plane, a single engine Pier Mooney, was headed to Gillespie field when it disappeared from the radar. An air search was immediately initiated, but it had to be called off because of 64 mile per hour winds, sleet and snow in the area. The searchers began pinging the pilots cell phone. They were able to find the downed plane early Thursday morning in the Volcano Mountain Wilderness Preserve. Two dead bodies, a man and a woman, were also discovered at the scene. Occupants of the plane were described as a San Diego couple. No names have been released. The plane had departed out of Palm Springs.
