(County Supervisors approve emergency declaration)….The local declaration was requested by the Office of Emergency Services.
County Fire Chief Tony Rouhotas is the OES Director. He told the Board Tuesday the declaration is for storm damage suffered by various Imperial County Communities. He says the storms began to hit Imperial County August 22nd and continue to the present. Damage from the storms is estimated into the millions of dollars. The Imperial Irrigation District says they suffered $4-$5 million in Calexico. The City is still assessing the other damage caused mostly last Saturday. Salton City estimates storm damage at around $2.7 million. Brawley, Imperial and other communities are still assessing damage from the storm system. Rouhotas said some communities, such as Calexico, are preparing to approve their own emergency declarations. The declarations will go to the Governor, who will consider a state declaration, freeing up emergency funds to help pay for damages suffered.
