(Bureau Forecasts lower water release next year.)….The Forecast was expected.
Because of the continued drought along the Colorado River, The Bureau of Reclamation Forecasts lower Water release from Lake Powell to Lake Mead for 2014. The Bureau has determined that, based on the best available data projections of Lake Powell and Lake Mead reservoir elevations, a release of 7.48 million acre-feet from Lake Powel is required next water year, from October 1,2013 through September 30, 2014. The release will be the lowest since Lake Powell was filled in the 1960’s. Lake Mead is projected to decline an additional 8 feet in the next water year as a result of the lower release. The Bureau says, however, Lake Mead will operate under normal conditions in the 2014 calendar year. Water users in the Lower Colorado River Basin and Mexico will receive their full water orders in accordance with the 2007 Interim Guidelines and the 1944 Treaty with Mexico.
