Imperial, California (Heroes recognized)…It was World Red Cross Day. Wednesday night the Red Cross Imperial Valley Service Center hosted a special event at the Pioneers Museum. It was the first Annual Heroes and Humanitarian Reception.
The speaker at the event was Tony Young, Chief Executive Officer for the American Red Cross San Diego/Imperial Valley Chapter. The Master of Ceremonies was Gene Brister. The Fire and Rescue Award went to Lt. Carlos Munoz of the Winterhaven Fire Protection District. The Law Enforcement Award was presented to Correctional Officers Aaron Arreola and Juan Galindo. Community Champion Award went to Sheila Riley of Brawley. The Military Award was presented to AME2 Robert Shavlay, stationed at the Naval Air Facility, El Centro. The surprise of the night were the Humanitarian Awards. They were not listed in the program. One of the awards went to County Sheriff/Coroner Raymond Loera. The other went to a shocked Gene Brister. He said he never expected to be presented with the award, that will now be known as the Brister/Loera award.
