(Enterprise Zones are being eliminated)….Imperial County has two.
State legislators recently approved AB 93, the bill eliminating the Enterprise Zones. The bill was backed by the Governor. Imperial County fought hard for the two Zones. One was in the North County the other in the South County. They were used to attract new development and create new jobs in Imperial County. In exchange, developers received tax incentives and other benefits. Last year the Governor announced the state could no longer afford the Enterprise Zones. They will all be eliminated in January. Dan Fitzgerald, executive director of the local Enterprise Zones told the Imperial Irrigation District Directors Tuesday a meeting had been scheduled for Thursday to discuss what will be the next step. The meeting will be held at the El Centro One Stop, beginning at 9:00 in the morning. It is a public meeting, but the main participants will be representatives from the County, the IID, and the Cities of Brawley and Calexico as well as others who sat on the Enterprise Zone committees. Future meetings will be scheduled for stakeholders in the local Enterprise Zones.
