On Friday March 14th 2014, Officers from the El Centro Police Department contacted two subjects as they sat in a Nissan Sentra in the parking lot of 3603 South Dogwood. The occupants were contacted due to one of the subject's having a "Pick Up and Hold" warrant and the other subject being wanted for three outstanding arrest warrants.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as Priscilla Carrillo, of Heber and the male passenger was identified as Benjamin Nanez of El Centro. Upon further investigation of the vehicle and its occupants, it was determined that the vehicle had been purchased earlier that day, in the City of Calexico, under the name of a stolen identity. Nanez was found to be in possession of various stolen items including, debit cards, social security cards, California Identifications Cards under various names and a California State Income Tax Return Check from an identity theft victim.
Carrillo and Nanez were identified as a duo who are suspected to have cashed several stolen\altered checks in the Cities of El Centro and Calexico. This began as early as February and as recently as Thursday March 13th at a Rabobank location in El Centro. Nanez and Carrillo are suspect to have intercepted several business checks valued at over $100,000 and altered them to be cashed throughout the County of Imperial. Nanez was using and operating under the stolen identity of "Christian Soto" and Carrillo operated under the stolen identity of "Vanessa Walls".
The El Centro Police Department Investigations Division believes there are more victims that have yet to come forward and report such incidents. "It is very important for people to be proactive in the protection of their information. This decreases the chances of being victimized" said Commander Aaron Reel. Victims are being asked to contact their local law enforcement agencies to report incidents of identity theft.
