(Details being released in the death of Alex Martin.)….Martin died in a burning vehicle in 2012.
The 24 year old had been stopped by Border Patrol agents on Old Highway 80, between Pine Valley and Sunrise Highway. Agents say they noticed Martin erratically, first going the wrong way on Interstate 8, and then failing to stop for Border Patrol agents. The agents brought the rented vehicle to a stop after deploying a tire deflation device. The vehicle burst into flames as a Border Patrol agent approached the driver. It was later learned that Martin was returning home to Texas after a visit to San Diego. Court documents now indicate the fire in the vehicle may have been started by a taser fired by the agent into the vehicle. Reports are that Martin refused to exit the vehicle as requested by the agent, and that the agent fired the taser after the 24 year old reached for something in the center console of the vehicle. Martin’s family has filed a lawsuit against the Border Patrol surrounding the death.
