(Haystack fire burns itself out)….The fire was reported Sunday.
County Fire Chief Tony Rouhotas says it involved five very large haystacks Southwest of Seeley. Residents in El Centro reported seeing the flames. The Chief said the blaze caused traffic problems on Interstate 8, as motorists slowed or stopped to take pictures and look at the fire. Rouhotas said crews knocked the haystacks down and spread to burning hay out as much as possible. They then let the fire burn itself out. The Chief said this is the best way to handle haystack fires. Crews were at the scene to insure the fire did not spread. No structures were damaged and Rouhotas said none of his firefighters were injured. He would not speculate on a cause of the fire, but Rouhotas said investigators have a pretty good idea.
