 Major earthquake strikes Hawaii on Sunday, October 15, 2006 at 10:07:49 AM (PDT). Governor Linda Lingle issued a disaster declaration for the entire state, saying there had been damage to buildings and roads. There were no reports of fatalities.

At Friday's conference of the southern California chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, Dr. Rogelio Reyes, coordinator of the translation and court interpreting programs at San Diego State University-Imperial Valley Campus, outlined what he hypothesizes to be the main problem in English-Portuguese translation: the hegemony of the English language in the 21st century vis ΰ vis the lack of a unified language policy among the Portuguese-speaking countries of the world. |
