(Calexico reorganization)...It was anything but routine.

The City Council held a special meeting this week. It was to choose a new Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem. It started with Councilman Javier Moreno nominating Councilman Camilo Garcia to replace Raul Urena as Mayor. Moreno said he nominated Garcia because he had been passed over last year in favor of Urena. He was outvoted. The outgoing Mayor then nominated the Mayor Pro Tem Gloria Romo. That nomination was approved on a 3-2 vote, with Garcia and Moreno voting no. Gilbert Manzanarez was chosen as Mayor Pro Tem. The council was then given the task of choosing an engineering firm to lead the repair of Calexico's Fire Station Number 2. Calexico City Manager Esperanza Colio Warren recommended The Holt Group. Rising to speak on the issue was former City Councilperson Maritza Hurtado. Instead of speaking on the issue, the Head of the Calexico Recall Coalition announced her group was filing a recall petition against the new Mayor. She then presented Romo with the recall papers. The Coalition is already recalling Urena and Manzanarez. The recall vote against them is in April. Hurtado's committee will now begin collecting signatures to recall Romo.
