A 69-year-old man died in an off-road accident over the Thanksgiving weekend.

According to the California Highway Patrol, on Friday, the man was driving a Can-Am Maverick off-road vehicle in the open desert of the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area near Glamis when a sudden drop in the terrain caused him to lose control of the UTV and overturn. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, 69-year-old Martha Duran of La Mirage, Arizona, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Pioneers Memorial Hospital for treatment. Both driver and passenger were wearing helmet and safety restraints at the time of the accident. The CHP and Imperial County Coroner's Office are investigating.
