(MANA de Imperial Valley Membership mixer)….It was held late last week at Club Lohoo.
The highlight of the evening was MANA’s 17th annual introduction of the Las Primeras Honorees. The 2013 Honorees introduced were Bertha Fletes-Karnes, Sister Maria Luisa Valez and Rebecca Singh. MANA chooses the Honorees from nominees submitted by members and the general public. They are chosen for their commitments and efforts in the community. MANA says they are Latina roll models for the entire community. Fletes-Karnes is a 30 year resident of Imperial County. She is a long advocate for scholarships and education in the community. Sister Valez with Our Lady of Victory Missionary has long served the needs of the poor, she has served as a voice for abused women and children and the elderly. Singh was the first female investigator hired by the Imperial County District Attorney’s office. She is heavily involved in Imperial County youth. She and her husband started the Police Athletic League in Imperial, ran a basketball league and they are involved in the FFA. All three will be recognized at the October 18th MANA de Imperial Valley Gala and Scholarship Fundraiser.
