(Treasury Sanctions Mexican traffickers tied to the Murder of Enrique Camarena)…..The Drug Enforcement Administration made the announcement Wednesday
. The DEA said the US Department of Treasury designated 18 individuals and 15 entities linked to Rafael Caro Quintero, a Mexican Drug Trafficker. Caro Quintero built his cartel in the 1970’s, and is currently serving a 40-year sentence in a Mexican jail for the 1985 murder of DEA Special Agent Enrique Camarena. They say Caro Quintero is still operating his business out of the jail, with accomplices. He is also wanted in California on criminal charges related to the kidnapping and murder of Camarena and drug trafficking. The action by the Treasury Department is pursuant to the Kingpin Act, and generally prohibits US persons from conducting financial or commercial transactions with those designated, and it also freezes any assets they may have under US Jurisdiction. The DEA says the designation is another critical tool that helps them pursue hardened career criminals and keep them on the run, making it even more difficult to use the drug assets they have amassed.
