(CHP chases down human smuggler)…It happened this week near Calexico.
Two California Highway Patrol units were providing traffic control as Cal Trans workers performed maintenance on the southbound lane of Highway 111, north of Cole Road. The CHP was notified of a motorist approaching on the shoulder of the Highway at a high rate of speed. When the vehicle approached, one of the CHP units attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle sped away, turning west on Cole Road. The vehicle collided with a cement barrier, but continued. Both CHP units joined in the pursuit, as the suspect vehicle traveled south on Portico Boulevard, then east on Camacho. The driver attempted a turn onto Scaroni Road, but lost a tire, causing the vehicle to spin. The driver jumped out of the vehicle with hands raised, and lay face down on the ground. Border Patrol agents were called and they determined the four passengers in the vehicle were in the US illegally. The Border Patrol agents took the driver and the passengers into custody. No one was injured in the incident.
