(Saturday’s fatal injury victim identified)….21 year old Jose Mendez was a passenger in the vehicle.
The California Highway Patrol says Mendez and two other rear seat passengers were ejected from the overturning vehicle Saturday morning on Westbound Interstate 8, East of the 4th Street over-pass. The vehicle was being driven by 20 year old Oscar Farias Sanchez of Mecca, There were four passengers in the black Nissan Sentra. The group was returning home from a night in Mexicali. At 5:50 in the morning, the CHP says Sanchez allowed the vehicle to drift into the center median between the railroad under cross west for Dogwood Road and 4th Street. The driver turned the steering wheel to the right, and the Nissan skidded across the westbound lanes, drove down the embankment and over-turned. Sanchez and the front seat passenger were wearing their seatbelts. The three sleeping rear seat passengers were not. Mendez was transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. The Highway Patrol is continuing their investigation, but say they do not feel alcohol was an attributing factor in the collision.
