Thousands of off-roaders in the dunes

(Over 100,000 ring in the New Year in the Dunes)….It is estimated just under 100,000 spent Christmas in the Imperial Sand Dune Recreation Area.

More outsiders came in for the New Year’s Holiday. Officials say many are still out there. Many plan to play in the dunes into the weekend. There have been two fatalities in the Glamis area, one woman was burned after she fell into a fire, and there have been several less serious collisions. Officials say it is a small city in the Dunes, and incidents will happen. The Bureau of Land Management, the Sheriff’s Department and others are in the Recreation areas in an attempt to keep the peace, and ensure the off-road experience is as safe as possible.
