US Citizen dies in Border custody

(Death of 58 year old under investigation)….Steven Keith died on Christmas Eve.

The man was in a holding cell at the Campo Border Patrol Station at the time of his death. The report from the Border Patrol is that the US Citizen was taken into custody at the Interstate 8 checkpoint between Campo and Pine Valley. He was arrested on suspicion of illegal possession and intent to distribute about 3 pounds of marijuana. They say drug paraphernalia and trace amounts of methamphetamine were also found in the man’s vehicle. Officials say after sitting several hours in the holding cell, Keith became incoherent and unresponsive. Border Patrol emergency medical technicians performed CPR until paramedics arrived. They took over CPR at around mid-night, but were unable to revive the man. Janet Keith, the man’s sister and a former police officer from Texas, is demanding a complete investigation into her brother’s death. The Border Patrol, Department of Homeland Security Office of Investigator General and the San Diego County Medical Examiner say they are all looking into the death.
