Yuma, Arizona – March 6, 2007 – Arizona Western College announced that the AWC Soccer Team will host the Desert Cup 6-A-Side Men’s Soccer Tournament on Sunday, March 18^th at the AWC Soccer Field. The tournament will start at approximately 8:00AM, with the championship game happening in the mid to late afternoon on Sunday. The tournament is open to any men ages 18 or older, but will be limited to the first 16 teams of 6 players each. However, there will be a maximum of 10 players allowed on a team. There will be a champion crowned from the tournament, and the champions will receive medals and championship T-shirts, and have their team name engraved on a plaque that will be displayed on the AWC campus.

While the Desert Cup is open to all skill levels, tournament organizers expect it to be a very competitive event, and will be on the lookout for those who stand out during the tournament as prospective recruits for the AWC Men’s Soccer program. “I have some experience with these types of tournaments as a player and a coach,” remarked AWC Head Soccer Coach Kenny Dale, who will help oversee the event, along with AWC Assistant Soccer Coaches Sarah Ramirez and Tina Contreras. “It’s always an exciting format. There’s a lot of touches for every player, and it’s a good opportunity for recruits to show what they can do. It’s a different type of setting for some players, but the level of play that comes out of this tournament is very competitive.”

Those interested in signing their 6-man team up can either download the registration form on the brand-new AWC Athletics website (www.azwestern.edu/athletics) or can call the AWC Soccer Office at (928) 317-7600. Teams need to provide their own numbered jerseys, and should come wearing standard soccer attire (including cleats and shin guards). Cost to enter is $50.00 per 6-man team.
