(Border Patrol agent assaulted)…The agent was hit in the face by a rock.
The agent had just foiled a smuggling attempt in the mountains near Jacumba. Border Patrol agents say they spotted a man Sunday night attempting to smuggle 14 people near Carries Mountain. It is believed the man was 39-year-old Martel Valencia Cortez. When the suspect saw the agents, he ran from the group and up the mountain. He reportedly threw a softball-sized rock at the agents as they closed in. The rock struck one of the agents in the face. The agent shot at the suspect, but they do not believe he was injured. He was last seen fleeing back into Mexico. The 14 people being smuggled were arrested and interviewed. They confirmed the suspect was, indeed, Valencia Cortez, one of San Diego’s most dangerous human smugglers. The Mexican National has a violent criminal history spanning more than a decade, including driving into oncoming traffic on roads and freeways, intimidating and threatening people he’s smuggled, assaulting agents and resisting and resisting arrest. He was released from prison in September after being sentenced for human smuggling in 2013.
