Federal , state and local officials will be on hand for a groundbreaking ceremony tomorrow.
The groundbreaking will celebrate the start of construction for Phase 1 of the Calexico West Land Port of Entry project. Phase 1 will include construction of new pedestrian processing and privately owned vehicle inspection facilities , a new head house to provide supervision and services to the non-commercial vehicle inspection area and new administration offices.
The downtown Calexico port of entry sees more than 11,000 privately operated vehicles and nearly 13,000 pedestrians enter the U.S. every day. The new project will increase operational space . reduce traffic congestion and create a safe environment for port employees and visitors according to the U.S. General Services Administration.The event starts at 1:30 p.m. at the old commercial port west of the current downtown port of entry.
