(It is Red Ribbon Week)…The focus of the week is mostly school children.
Presentations are made at various school, teaching the dangers of illegal drugs and other illicit substances. It is a national event that began in Calexico. In 1985, following the murder of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena in Mexico, family and friends of the slain agent wanted to do something beneficial that would keep Camarena’s memory alive. Camarena was a native of Calexico. Red Ribbon Week was created, and it spread across the country. During presentation, school kids can sign a pledge to avoid illegal drugs. The kids are encouraged to make the right choices as they grow up.
