A county prisoner escaped from custody Monday afternoon.
According to the Imperial County Sheriff's Office , 35-year old Robert Montenegro of El Centro , was in court Monday for probation violation. Montenegro was remanded to custody by the presiding judge and , while being transported to Imperial County Jail , complained of chest pains. The prisoner was taken to Pioneers Memorial Hospital for medical treatment. While at the hospital , Montenegro bolted from a deputy. The deputy gave chase but lost sight of Montenegro. A search was conducted by Imperial County Sheriff's deputies assisted by Brawley Police , El Centro Police and the California Highway Patrol. Montenegro was located about four hours later when a citizen saw the escaped prisoner running towards an open field. Montenegro was taken into custody a short time later. He now faces additional charges.
