(3 suspected marijuana smugglers arrested)…The Border Patrol made the arrests early Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred at around 3:15 in the morning. Border Patrol agents operating a Remote Video Surveillance System spotted two men carrying large backpacks climb the border fence near the Alamitos Canal. The men walked towards a parked 1994 Pontiac Sunbird on Highway 98. Agents say the men placed the backpacks in the trunk of the vehicle. The men got into the Pontiac and it drove away. Border Patrol agents responded and attempted to execute a vehicle stop. The driver failed to yield and the vehicle sped away. Agents say the chase reached high speeds, when they noticed smoke coming out of the Pontiac’s engine. The vehicles speed reduced abruptly, but the driver would not stop the vehicle. Agents say they saw a man open the front passenger door and jump from the vehicle. An agent was able to catch the man as he tried to run back into Mexico. The vehicle finally stopped near Highway 98 and Anderholt Road. Agents arrested the two men in the vehicle and retrieved the backpacks from the trunk. They contained three large packages of marijuana, weighing more than 100 pounds, with a street value of more than $64,350. The driver was described as a 24-year-old US citizen. The other two men, a 19 year old and a 45 year old, both Mexican citizens. All three were taken into custody. The 3, the vehicle and the marijuana were all turned over to the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Task Force
